As we celebrate our country’s independence today with barbeques, parades, fireworks and speeches, entrepreneurs are celebrating their personal independence too. There’s nothing like being in business for yourself.
We often hear small business is the backbone of this country. So it seems appropriate to celebrate the spirit of entrepreneurship today. This country was founded by entrepreneurs. Our forefathers took a risk and came to America with the vision of building a better life. These brave men and women were shopkeepers, shoemakers, farmers, etc. Most everyone was involved in a small business of some sort. In my opinion, our country has come full-circle as our country’s economic foundation is built on the backs of entrepreneurs.
What does it take to get up the courage like the early American settlers who passionately chose to strike out on their own to build a bold new life? Is there a right time?
To be a successful entrepreneur it takes a willingness to take a risk and fail. Over 50 percent of small businesses fail in the first three years so it’s a huge gamble. However, many of the most successful entrepreneurs — the big names we all recognize — have failed along their journey. It’s a learning experience. You pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and move on.
Let’s celebrate the contributions entrepreneurs make to our country, our communities and our lives. And if you’re a small business owner — kudos to you. You are the heart of America.
